Have you ever noticed how some spaces feel alive, while others feel contained? Initially, a leaf of food feeds us, a garden nurtures us, but how do buildings feed the mind? At ODA, we strive to design spaces that acknowledge the harmony between memory, emotion, and environment. Architecture is intrinsically tied to the unconscious — it shapes us even when we are not paying attention. It is why textured stone can feel grounding, natural light can lift the spirit, and soft curves can calm the nerves. The spaces we inhabit influence our internal world in ways we don’t always recognize.
Swiss psychologist Carl Jung spent his life understanding human healing with his theory of the shadow consciousness. The mind is not just the sum of our conscious experiences, but also the parts we cannot see or articulate. The places we design shape that internal shadow — in ways both intentional and unintentional. The best architecture supports the mind by giving it room to process, connect, and feel a sense of safety. That quiet process is the foundation of human instinct and emotional experience.
When we imagine how architectural spaces could nourish the subconscious, we imagine buildings as symbolic: that it listens, speaks, and responds without noise or distraction.
We recognize the power of art, architecture, and nature as a symbolic dialogue, a power of meaning we aren’t always aware of.
We become more comfortable, deliberate, and reflective.
It’s about feeling comfortable in your body, and giving where you live, a soul + heart.
There is not just a design element, but individualized shapes. These subconscious reactions inspire human psychological depth; they tap into the science of the subconscious mind.
At ODA, we strive to honor the relationship between function and emotion.
Architecture becomes a bridge between the tangible (the fixtures, the finishes, the materials) and the intangible (the memories, the emotions, the internal stories). When done well, a space impacts us and allows us to return to ourselves.
Let’s discuss turning your vision into a masterpiece!
