Dear Friends …
First impressions matter. Whether meeting someone new or arriving at a destination, it’s arguably the most important interaction with something new. In architecture, Marriott’s concept of “Transformative Arrival” describes the powerful impression created upon entry. Thoughtful planning and design can shape visitors’ moods, memories, and perceptions of a place.
Sensitively considering how people enter, move through, and experience space can create positive memories that endure long after a visit. Material quality, spatial composition, and sequencing all contribute to this effect. These elements work together to create lasting impressions. Elevating the arrival experience transforms simple circulation into a deliberate journey that reinforces the building’s identity. Every interaction, from the entry to the final interior space leaves a profound, lingering impact on the visitor’s perception of the environment.
This ideology guided our design of the JW Marriott in Greenville. More than a doorway, the entrance marks a transition from the city’s energy to a calm, welcoming retreat. By designing the interior to be as inviting as the exterior, the sense of arrival creates an elevated and cohesive experience that extends throughout the building.
At ODA Architecture, we view arrival as more than the beginning of a journey. It is a foundational moment that sets the emotional tone for everything that follows. Integrating entrance features, landscapes, and expressive architecture creates immersive and memorable experiences that resonate with visitors. This intentional design philosophy transforms a simple physical entry into a captivating sensory narrative where every visitor feels welcomed and inspired, ensuring that they return time and time again.

Congratulations to Auro Hotels on their recent announcement of the JW Marriott in Greenville, South Carolina!
The proposed 335-room hotel will bring South Carolina’s first JW Marriott to downtown Greenville, transforming the historic Bowater Building overlooking Falls Park and the Reedy River. The hotel will serve as a centerpiece of the new Falls Park Conference District and will feature four food and beverage concepts, a JW Garden, executive lounge, more than 8,800 square feet of meeting and event space, and outdoor terraces offering views across the river and downtown.
This project marks an important milestone in Greenville’s continued growth as a regional destination for business, tourism, and hospitality. By adding a luxury hotel and major conference component in the heart of downtown, the development will strengthen the city’s ability to attract larger events and visitors while reinforcing the momentum that has made Greenville one of the Southeast’s most dynamic and desirable downtowns.

EXTRA EXTRA

On Friday, August 7th, the ODA team rolled up their sleeves at the NourishUp Warehouse to pack boxes headed to a local food pantry. Together, we helped provide meals for 150 people, proving that a little teamwork can make a big difference!
Shout out to the NourishUp team for all that they do to support Mecklenburg County!
