ODA Architecture, celebrates 40 years in business in 2024. Established in Uptown Charlotte in 1984 by Stephen Overcash, Managing Principal, the firm has witnessed Charlotte’s transformation from a small city to the thriving region it is today. Originally known as Overcash Demmitt Architects, the firm transitioned to ODA Architecture, NC, after Tim Demmitt’s retirement in 2019.
Over four decades, ODA Architecture has grown up with Charlotte, evolving into a successful commercial architecture firm headquartered in Charlotte’s South End district. Today, the firm includes a team of 20 talented architects and designers, with Tim Moore, Kevin Brown, Jessica Hoke, Erica Kennedy, serving as principals. While ODA’s primary focus has been in Charlotte and the eastern United States, it has also undertaken projects in over 25 states.
Reflecting on the firm’s journey, Stephen Overcash remarks, “Starting an architecture firm in Charlotte in 1984 required ambition, a commitment to delivering exceptional service, and innovative architectural design while fostering a culture of fun. At the backbone of Charlotte’s growth is its entrepreneurial spirit.” Jessica Hoke, ODA Principal, acknowledges Overcash’s leadership, describing him as a visionary mentor who thrives on challenges.

ODA has worked collaboratively with many planning departments and community stakeholders to inspire change by writing zoning amendments that have created positive improvements in many communities.
Despite offers of acquisition from other firms, ODA Architecture remains a local independent firm, prioritizing creativity and maintaining a positive work environment. Over the years, the firm has weathered economic downturns and challenges. In 40 years, ODA has employed over 250 individuals, many of whom have gone on to establish their own successful firms.
Community engagement lies at the heart of ODA’s values, with a commitment to giving back through partnerships with local non-profit organizations. As part of its “40 before 40” initiative, all employees pledged to volunteer a minimum of 40 hours in the community in 2024. Notable philanthropic work includes Victory Junction, a camp for children with chronic and serious illnesses, Roof Above, Allegro Foundation and Nourish Up.
Specializing in the hospitality sector, ODA Architecture has collaborated with national brands including Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, and IHG, designing over 300 hotels. The firm has been instrumental in pioneering mixed-use communities and incorporating LEED and sustainable principles into their designs.
